Former Big Brother Naija housemate and comedian, Aderombi Martin, better known as DeeOne, has shared deep insights into his life, career, and upcoming projects. In a candid chat with The PUNCH, he explained why he chose to title his forthcoming show The Failed Comedian.
According to him, the name is a bold response to critics who have often labelled him a failure. He noted that even the world’s most successful figures like Dangote and Otedola failed multiple times before achieving greatness. For DeeOne, turning that “failed” tag into a brand is about rewriting the narrative and proving doubters wrong. He revealed his ambitious plan to host the show at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, targeting an audience of 50,000 people.
Speaking on his career growth, DeeOne said he carved his niche in satire—using humour to highlight overlooked truths. While many comedians depend heavily on skits and stage jokes, he believes his satirical style and strong media presence set him apart. “Some comedians are struggling today because they haven’t maximised the media space. I’m intentional about that,” he said.
On social media numbers, DeeOne acknowledged that while followers matter, true success lies in traction and relevance across platforms. “Anybody can buy followers, but you can’t fake genuine traction,” he stated. He admitted that being controversial has worked to his advantage, as it keeps his name in public conversations.
Reflecting on his toughest career moment, DeeOne recalled the backlash after BBNaija, where fans insulted him simply for being himself. He credited psychological support from the show organisers for helping him cope. “Over time, I realised even criticism is a privilege. What matters is that people know you,” he said.
Beyond comedy, DeeOne revealed he would have pursued music, as he grew up playing instruments in church. His shows often mirror his life—like Preacher’s Kid and D1 Evicted. Despite online banter and criticism, he maintains humility as his guiding principle, noting that pride can easily ruin an entertainer.
With eyes set on breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest stand-up comedy performance, DeeOne said his mission is to put Nigerian comedy on the global stage, just like music and film. “Failures only bring one closer to success,” he concluded.
