Media mogul and political figure, Dele Momodu, has revealed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was originally meant to succeed ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo after their first term in office. The plan, however, crumbled, leading to a major fallout between the two political giants.
In an article shared on his Facebook page, Momodu claimed that Atiku had the backing of most state governors to become president after Obasanjo’s initial four years. But when the agreement fell apart, Obasanjo reportedly stripped Atiku of his constitutional powers and sidelined him throughout their second term.
Despite the political betrayal, Atiku is said to have handled the situation with calmness and maturity, choosing not to escalate tensions. Momodu praised him for turning to business after leaving office, describing him as a man with the “Midas touch” who has built a successful private sector presence, unlike many of his political peers.
The revelation adds new depth to the long-standing political rivalry between Atiku and other power players in Nigeria, especially as Atiku continues to seek the presidency, including his latest bid in the 2023 elections, where he came second to Bola Tinubu.
