The State Executive Council (SEC) of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) met on Monday, December 15, 2025, to review key national and state-level labour issues affecting workers. The meeting focused mainly on feedback from the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held earlier in December in Lagos, which brought together 17 affiliate unions.
During the session, members were extensively briefed on the growing concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation. The council described the state of insecurity across the country as alarming and debilitating, noting that it continues to affect workers’ safety, livelihoods and overall well-being. Updates were also received on the ongoing crisis in the tertiary education sector, industrial disputes in the health sector—particularly the HOHESU strike—and the revival of the Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO). The state of the Labour Party was equally reviewed.
After deliberating on issues specific to Edo State, the council adopted the resolutions of the NLC NEC meeting of December 4, 2025. It strongly condemned the inability of the Nigerian state to effectively address the country’s security challenges and resolved to fully participate in the nationwide protest against insecurity scheduled for December 17, 2025. The Edo NLC leadership was directed to mobilise workers and coordinate the protest.
The SEC also aligned with the NEC in criticising the government’s handling of the crises in the education and health sectors. It welcomed the revival of LASCO and commended the Igbafen-led Caretaker Committee for efforts to stabilise and reposition the Edo State NLC, passing a vote of confidence in the committee.
In closing, the council appealed to the Edo State Government to work closely with the NLC to depoliticise the labour movement in the state, stressing that cooperation and neutrality are essential for peace and effective representation of workers’ interests.
