The Caretaker Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State Council, met on Friday, September 19, 2025, with affiliate unions in Benin City to deliberate on the state of the labour movement in the state. The meeting, attended by 14 affiliate unions, ended with a series of resolutions aimed at restoring unity and credibility to the Edo NLC.
In its communiqué, the gathering reaffirmed confidence in the caretaker team’s mandate to restore peace, order, and prepare the ground for credible elections. Delegates praised the committee for its efforts in upholding the dignity and ethos of the labour movement and expressed appreciation to the national leadership under Comrade Joe Ajaero for its support in reforming the Edo council.
The unions also commended the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) for its timely intervention regarding the resignation of Comrade Mike Ochei from the caretaker committee. Dismissing speculations, the meeting denied that the caretaker team was aligned with any faction or opposed to the Edo State Government, stressing instead its commitment to fostering productive labour relations that benefit all parties.
Appealing for reconciliation, the unions urged aggrieved members to embrace dialogue and comradeship to reposition the Edo NLC for greater effectiveness. Among the unions represented were ASUU, SSANU, JUSUN, NUPENG, NUEE, NANNM, NUBIFIE, NUCFRLANMPE, and NUBBTE.
Signed by Comrade Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen, chairman of the caretaker committee, the communiqué closed with a familiar declaration: “The struggle continues.”
