The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has shed light on the tragic incident that led to the death of Endurance Udeke, a Lagos resident who reportedly fell from a four-storey building during a sting operation in Lekki Phase 1.
In a statement released by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC described the event as “unfortunate” and attributed it to what he called the “suicidal action” of the deceased. He noted that the Commission felt compelled to clarify the situation to the public.
According to the EFCC, operatives were at Periwinkle Estate to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters when Udeke and another resident allegedly attempted to evade arrest by jumping from their apartment. “The operation was smooth in all other apartments, and four suspects were successfully arrested,” Oyewale said.
Tragically, Udeke did not survive the fall despite urgent medical efforts to revive him. His companion, however, was stabilised after treatment. The Commission stated that it had contacted Udeke’s family to explain what happened and to assure them of the steps taken to save his life.
Oyewale emphasised that there was no physical contact between EFCC operatives and Udeke before the fall. He further disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force has begun investigating the incident to uncover all facts surrounding the case.
Meanwhile, public reactions have been mixed. Many Nigerians are calling for a transparent probe to determine whether due process was followed and to ensure accountability. The EFCC has urged citizens to remain calm, insisting that “no one with nothing to hide has reason to fear an EFCC operation.”
