Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has denied reports circulating on social media suggesting that he endorsed a particular region of Nigeria to produce the president in the 2027 general election.
Reacting via his verified Facebook page on Monday, El-Rufai described the claims as outright “fake news,” stressing that he never made such remarks in any speech, interview, or social media post.
He clarified that his views should only be attributed to him when they are expressed through his official social media platforms or during interviews with recognised and credible media organisations.
The former governor also cautioned against wrongly assigning opinion articles written by other authors to him simply because he shared them, noting that such misattributions only serve to distort national discourse.
“These caveats are crucial as we confront both irresponsible politicking and the deliberate misuse of social media for spreading fake news,” he said.
El-Rufai further criticised media platforms and senior editors who fail to verify information before publication, arguing that such lapses contribute to what he described as an “unedifying Olympics of fiction and fakery” in the public space.
He added that the deliberate attribution of statements he did not make should not be treated with any seriousness, urging journalists and the public to uphold accuracy and responsibility in reporting.
El-Rufai concluded by stressing the importance of fact-checking before sharing information, especially in an era increasingly plagued by misinformation and deliberate falsehoods.
