Ex-Senator Marafa Backs Trump’s Threat on Nigeria: ‘Sovereignty Means Nothing to a Dead Man’

Former Senator Kabiru Marafa has thrown his weight behind former U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning of possible military action in Nigeria, saying it could pressure the government to tackle insecurity more decisively. Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central from 2011 to 2019, spoke on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“I strongly support the President of America, Donald Trump, for issuing that threat,” Marafa said, countering critics who cited national sovereignty. “I differ with a lot of Nigerians because most Nigerians look at it from the perspective of sovereignty, patriotism, which I subscribe to. But of what importance is sovereignty to a dead man?”

He added that Trump’s remarks draw renewed global attention to Nigeria’s worsening security situation, particularly attacks targeting Christians. Last month, Trump directed the Pentagon to prepare for potential military action, warning that Washington may intervene to stop what he described as persecution of Christians.

Marafa stressed that protecting citizens’ lives should take priority over sovereignty concerns, insisting the U.S. threat has put the Nigerian government under pressure to act decisively. Meanwhile, the U.S. has officially designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged violations of religious freedom.
