Tragedy struck Obinwanne community in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday when an explosion killed a man and left two passers-by injured. A disturbing video from the scene showed the victim, identified as Chinworeke Mmadu, writhing in pain with his legs shattered by the blast.
Residents alleged that the deceased may have been attempting to plant the device in a nearby market before it went off prematurely. Some also linked him to a terror group operating under the guise of Biafra agitation, though this has yet to be independently confirmed.
In a statement, Police Command spokesman Henry Okoye revealed that preliminary findings suggested the explosive was being carried by Mmadu when it detonated. He said operatives from Njaba Division swiftly mobilized to the scene and rushed the injured to the hospital.

ner of Police, Hamzat Abdulkadir, led the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to comb the area, which was later declared safe for public use. Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, prayed for the quick recovery of the victims and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to their safety.
The police urged locals to remain calm, vigilant, and proactive in sharing timely information to help curb insecurity in the state.
