Fccpc Warns Transport Operators Against Arbitrary Yuletide Fare Hikes

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has cautioned inter-city road transport operators to avoid arbitrary fare increases during the festive season as complaints from travellers surge nationwide. In a statement on Sunday, FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs Ondaje Ijagwu stressed that passengers must be properly informed and protected, noting that unfair pricing practices will not be tolerated.

The Commission acknowledged that seasonal demand and operational costs may influence fares but emphasised that consumers are entitled to clear, accurate, and timely information. Any unexplained or undisclosed fare hikes, particularly during the yuletide when premium motor spirit prices have dropped in some areas, are considered violations of consumer protection principles.

FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello revealed that the agency has intensified monitoring of transport pricing across the country, engaging unions, park managers, and operators to promote responsible pricing and voluntary compliance. While fare increases are not illegal, practices such as poor disclosure, coercion, or collusion among operators could attract sanctions under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

Travellers have been urged to confirm fares in advance, keep payment records, and report any abuses to FCCPC through official channels, ensuring transparency and fairness during the holiday travel rush.
