FG Approves $1 Billion Modernisation Project for Lagos Ports

The Federal Government has approved a $1 billion modernisation project for the Lagos ports, as part of a broader initiative to upgrade Nigeria’s seaport infrastructure and enhance efficiency in maritime operations.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, during the 2025 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria Conference held in Lagos. The event, themed “Enhancing Logistics and Transport for a Sustainable Blue Economy in Nigeria,” brought together key industry stakeholders and policymakers.

Represented by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Oyetola said the port modernisation effort aims to create a paperless, technology-driven port system that enhances cargo handling, reduces turnaround time, and minimizes corruption.

He explained that the $1 billion Lagos port modernisation is a landmark move designed to upgrade infrastructure, expand capacity, and align operations with global best practices. Beyond Lagos, the minister revealed that the government has also commenced procurement processes for similar projects across other Nigerian ports to promote balanced national development.

According to him, these initiatives reflect the administration’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s logistics performance and competitiveness, positioning the country as a preferred maritime trade hub in Africa.

Oyetola further highlighted the success of the Deep Blue Project, noting that Nigeria has recorded zero piracy incidents in the last three years—a feat that underscores the government’s resolve to secure its maritime domain and attract more investments.

He assured stakeholders that ongoing reforms and institutional strengthening within the Ministry are focused on reducing the cost of doing business, improving safety, and fostering sustainable growth within the marine and blue economy sectors.
