FG Enforces ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy as Lecturers’ Strike Drags On

The Federal Government has officially ordered the suspension of salaries for lecturers currently participating in the ongoing strike. This directive marks a renewed enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy across all federal universities in Nigeria.

According to a circular dated October 13, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, vice-chancellors have been instructed to implement the policy immediately. The circular emphasized that, under the Labour Laws of the Federation, any employee who fails to perform their duties during a strike period is not entitled to payment.

The move comes as members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continue their industrial action over the government’s failure to address long-standing issues, including unpaid allowances and improved funding for tertiary education.

Copies of the circular were sent to key stakeholders, including the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, the Accountant-General, the Director-General of the Budget Office, and Pro-Chancellors of federal universities. The decision has already sparked fresh tension within the academic community, with many describing it as a step that could further strain relations between the government and the lecturers.
