FG Makes TRCN Licence Mandatory for All Teachers by 2027

The Federal Ministry of Education has rolled out a sweeping reform that will change how teaching is regulated in Nigeria. In a statement released Sunday, the ministry announced that every teacher must now be registered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), with licensing made compulsory before stepping into any classroom.

Under the new framework, TRCN will oversee licensing and regulation, while NTI will drive in-service training and community-based professional development. Education Minister, Dr. Maruf Alausa, said the move is designed to raise standards and guarantee quality teaching across the country. “No teacher will stand before a Nigerian classroom without TRCN registration and licensing,” he declared.

The guidelines also cover curriculum standards, welfare, compliance monitoring, and professional development. Schools that fail to ensure their teachers are properly certified risk losing accreditation. From 2027, approval to host public examinations such as WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and NBIAS will strictly depend on teachers’ TRCN certification.
