A FIRE broke out late Saturday night at Isiolo Girls High School in central Kenya, injuring three students and destroying dormitory property, according to the Kenya Red Cross and local police. The incident occurred just two days after a deadly blaze at another boarding school in the same region claimed the lives of 21 students.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the fire in a post on X (formerly Twitter), reporting that it had been contained early Sunday morning. Three students suffered minor injuries, and authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze.
Search for survivors
Kenya Police spokesperson Resila Onyango also confirmed that the fire was under control, but no details were provided on the cause. After the fire was extinguished, police and rescue teams searched through the wrecked dormitories, using flashlights to look for any survivors or salvageable belongings, according to a Reuters witness.
This latest fire comes on the heels of a tragic incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, where a devastating fire on Friday killed 21 students. The death toll in that blaze was initially reported as 17, but a government update on Sunday revealed that it had risen to 21, with two additional victims succumbing to their injuries in the hospital.
Ongoing investigation
Kenyan authorities are currently investigating the causes of both fires, as the country grapples with growing concerns over safety in its boarding schools. The rapid succession of these tragic events has left the nation in shock, and parents are calling for stricter safety measures to protect students.
