Fitch Predicts Mahama, NDC win in Ghana’s 2024 Elections

IN a recent forecast, international research and data firm Fitch Solutions has projected that John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will emerge victorious in Ghana’s 2024 general elections. The London-based firm has been consistent in its election predictions since last year and bases its latest forecast on a survey indicating that 54 percent of respondents believe Mahama will win in December.

Fitch Solutions’ mid-year review for Sub-Saharan Africa highlights the significant impact of Ghana’s current economic state on voter behaviour. Mike Kruiniger, Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, remarked, ‘We believe that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).’

The firm’s data shows that recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead, with the most recent survey showing 54 percent support for the NDC. Kruiniger pointed out that key issues like job creation and economic management are likely to heavily influence voters’ decisions, potentially disadvantaging the ruling NPP due to the prevailing economic difficulties.

‘Various surveys have demonstrated that economic management and job creation are top priorities for voters in this election. Given the economic challenges Ghana has faced in recent years, we believe this will put the ruling NPP at a disadvantage,’ Kruiniger added.

This prediction underscores the crucial role of economic performance in shaping electoral outcomes and presents a significant challenge for the NPP as they strive to maintain their hold on power in the upcoming elections.
