FlySafair tops global on-time rankings

SOUTH African low-cost carrier FlySafair has been named one of the world’s most punctual airlines, delivering an on-time performance (OTP) of 95.82 percent, according to Cirium’s February 2025 On-Time Performance Report. The Johannesburg-based airline was the only African carrier to make the top rankings and continues to set the standard for reliability in a challenging aviation climate.

Despite ongoing industry-wide issues such as staff shortages and air traffic control delays at some airports, FlySafair recorded only two flight cancellations last month. Its commitment to punctuality reinforces its reputation as one of Africa’s most dependable airlines.

The airline, which operates flights to 14 destinations across sub-Saharan Africa, has consistently improved its performance since its inception in 2013. FlySafair’s remarkable February achievement is a significant boost not just for the airline but for the continent’s growing aviation industry.

China and Canada struggle with cancellations

While FlySafair flies high, other countries are grappling with high flight cancellation rates. A recent analysis by TravelPerk, by the British Express newspaper, revealed that China had the highest rate of cancelled flights globally, with approximately 5 percent of all departures between March and September 2024 being called off. Canada followed with a cancellation rate of 3.4 percent.

The report reviewed flight data from ten major travel markets, including the USA, UK, Spain, India, Japan, Brazil, Italy, Germany, China, and Canada. The United States, despite operating more than five million flights over the same period, experienced a cancellation rate of 2.76%, ranking third on the list.

Global flight disruptions improve

Encouragingly, Cirium’s 2025 data shows a general decline in flight cancellations. Last month saw an 18 percent drop in cancellations worldwide compared to previous periods. Industry experts suggest improved airline scheduling and better resource allocation are beginning to make a difference in reducing delays and disruptions.

European airlines also perform strongly

European carriers are also making notable improvements in punctuality. Spain’s Iberia reported an OTP of 91.25 percent, while British Airways followed with 86.89 percent. These figures highlight a strong focus on operational efficiency across European airlines.

FlySafair’s growth and safety record

Founded in 2013, FlySafair has rapidly expanded its network and now serves 14 destinations within sub-Saharan Africa. It has built a solid reputation for safety and reliability. In April 2024, a FlySafair Boeing 737-800 safely landed despite losing its left main landing gear. No injuries were reported, underscoring the airline’s ability to handle emergencies effectively.

FlySafair’s consistent on-time record and growing passenger confidence are helping to raise the bar for African aviation.

A promising future for air travel

While some regions continue to experience frequent disruptions, the overall global aviation outlook is improving. FlySafair’s success demonstrates how strategic management and a focus on customer experience can overcome operational challenges.

As airlines worldwide strive for better service and fewer cancellations, FlySafair’s example shows that even in a complex operating environment, reliability remains achievable.
