At least four people have been reportedly killed, and more than 45 others injured following a violent attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on the Akunza-Ashigye community near Assakio in Lafia East Development Area, Nasarawa State.
Eyewitnesses described the assault as sudden and brutal. Mr. Jonathan Adamu, a resident, suggested the attack may be linked to a long-standing conflict between Fulani herdsmen and the host community, which had previously claimed lives on both sides in 2024. He added that the retaliation could have been sparked by a recent incident where two Fulani herdsmen returning from a cattle market were ambushed near a bridge, resulting in the death of one of them.
Confirming the incident, Nasarawa State Police spokesperson, SP Raham Nansel, said three deaths had so far been officially recorded, with two people dying on the spot and another later succumbing to injuries at the hospital. He added that investigations were ongoing.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered a massive deployment of security personnel to restore calm and prevent further violence. Authorities assured residents that efforts are being intensified to apprehend those responsible and to avert any reprisal attacks.
The tragic incident underscores the persistent tension between Fulani herders and local communities in Nasarawa, highlighting the urgent need for lasting conflict resolution measures.
