Fresh Terror Attack Hits Kogi Community, One Killed as Fear Deepens in Yagba East

Terrorists have attacked Idofin community in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing one person and leaving another seriously injured, further heightening fear among residents already battling recurring insecurity.

standarddailypress gathered that the attack occurred between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026. The deceased was identified as a Tiv man, while another indigene of the community sustained severe injuries during the assault.

According to a local platform, Egbe Mekun, the injured victim was later evacuated by military personnel and taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment. As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kogi State Government nor the Nigerian Police had issued an official statement on the incident.

Residents of the area say the latest attack has renewed anxiety in the community, with many calling on the state government and security agencies to urgently strengthen security in Yagba East and neighbouring communities to prevent further loss of lives.

The incident comes amid a wider security crisis in parts of Kogi State. standarddailypress had earlier reported that Ayetoro-Kiri community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area was plunged into mourning after three abducted residents died, despite the payment of ransom raised through communal efforts.

Although seven abductees were later released by the kidnappers, reports indicated that three were already dead upon arrival, while four others were hospitalised and are currently battling for their lives. Meanwhile, about 30 residents are still believed to be in captivity, with their fate remaining uncertain.

In a statement signed by the community’s spokesperson, David Ampitan, and obtained by standarddailypress , residents lamented that instead of taking decisive action to protect lives, rescue abducted victims, or pursue the attackers, authorities allegedly turned against the people.

The statement accused the Kogi State Government, acting through the Chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government, of responding to peaceful protests with tear gas and arrests, even as residents demanded security, justice, and the rescue of their kidnapped relatives.

Community members say the growing pattern of attacks and the government’s response have left them feeling abandoned, as they continue to live under the shadow of fear and uncertainty.
