From Legacy to the Ballot: Yusuf Buhari Steps Into Politics

Yusuf Buhari, son of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has now taken a major step into the political arena after formally indicating interest in contesting for the House of Representatives seat for Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua federal constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development may not come as a complete surprise, but it is still a significant moment in Nigeria’s political landscape. For years, Yusuf Buhari remained largely quiet and distant from frontline politics, even during his father’s time in office. That silence made him one of the least politically visible members of the Buhari family. But now, that appears to be changing.

According to reports, his decision followed wide consultations with party stakeholders, elders, and influential figures across the constituency. That detail matters because in Nigerian politics, especially at the grassroots, these early alignments often determine how far an ambition can go. It shows this move is not just a casual interest — it is being carefully prepared.

What makes this development more interesting is the weight of the Buhari name, especially in Katsina State and the wider North. Love him or criticise him, the late Muhammadu Buhari built a political identity that still carries emotional and electoral value among many loyal supporters. Yusuf’s emergence will naturally draw attention, not only because of who he is, but because many will now ask whether he can build his own political identity outside his father’s shadow.

Still, family name alone will not be enough. The real test will be whether Yusuf can connect with ordinary constituents on issues that affect them directly — security, youth opportunities, infrastructure, education, and economic survival.

His entry into the race may reshape local APC calculations and increase competition ahead of the primaries. But beyond the symbolism, Nigerians will be watching to see if this is simply a continuation of political legacy — or the beginning of a serious political journey with substance behind it.
