Guinea’s Transition Not Ending Dec. 31, 2024, Says official

THE transition period in Guinea, which began after the military seized power on September 5, 2021, will not conclude on December 31, 2024, according to Amara Camara, secretary general of the Guinean presidency. Speaking at a press conference, Camara explained that the ‘dynamic compromise’ with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) involves readjusting the transition schedule at each stage.

‘At each stage reached, we will sit down with ECOWAS to reassess and make readjustments,’ Camara said. He emphasized that the elections concluding the transition must be organised peacefully and harmoniously, ensuring that the current process remains uninterrupted.

Government spokesperson Ousmane Gaoual Diallo announced that the Guinean government plans to hold a referendum before the end of this year to establish a new constitution, which will pave the way for the elections.

In a March 12 interview, Prime Minister Bah Oury acknowledged that much work remains to complete the transition schedule and suggested that 2025 would be an appropriate time to finalise the process.

The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development, Guinea’s ruling military junta, initially declared that it would hand over power on December 31, 2024, upon assuming office on September 5, 2021. However, the recent statements indicate a more flexible timeline, contingent on ongoing evaluations and adjustments with ECOWAS.
