Gunmen Attack Bereaved Benue Family, Demand Burial Donations

Barely five days after laying their mother to rest, the family of Lawrence Iorwa has been thrown into fresh pain following a violent attack on their family compound by unknown gunmen.

Eyewitnesses said three armed men stormed the residence in the early hours of Friday, attacking members of the grieving family. The assailants reportedly beat and tortured the occupants while demanding money contributed during the burial of their late mother, who died in a motor accident along the Amaafu–Katsina-Ala Road.

The attack left several family members badly injured and deeply traumatised. Lawrence’s father was said to have suffered a severely swollen leg, while Lawrence himself sustained serious injuries to his hand. An aunt and an uncle’s wife who were also present during the attack were beaten and robbed.

Despite attempts to resist, the family was overpowered. The gunmen allegedly made away with all available cash and valuables in the house, including mobile phones, bags, clothes, and other personal belongings.

In a particularly painful twist, the attackers were said to have taken away the clothes of the family’s late mother. They also stole the family’s motorcycle, cutting off their only means of transportation and leaving them stranded.

An emotional family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as devastating. He said the family was still struggling to cope with the loss of their mother when the attack occurred, compounding their grief with fear, injuries, and uncertainty.

“Nothing feels normal anymore. We are scared, hurt, and confused about what to do next,” he said.

The family has appealed to security agencies and relevant authorities to intervene swiftly and ensure those behind the attack are arrested and brought to justice.
