Award-winning Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has once again voiced her strong support for former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi — a man she describes as humble, genuine, and deeply committed to Nigeria’s progress.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Adichie highlighted what sets Obi apart from the usual crowd of political contenders. “He doesn’t need to be president — he wants to, because he truly cares,” she said. “That difference matters.”
For her, Obi represents a refreshing break from the kind of politicians whose ambition is fueled by ego, not patriotism. “Some people are desperate for power, not because they love Nigeria, but because they love the idea of being in control,” she stated.
Adichie’s support for Obi isn’t just political — it’s personal and passionate. “My endorsement is rooted in love for this country,” she said, pointing to his consistency, simplicity, and values she has witnessed for over 15 years.
She praised Obi’s humility, saying, “He doesn’t expect thanks for doing his job. He sees himself as accountable to the people — not the other way around.”
Though she declined to say how she would feel if Obi doesn’t run in 2027, Adichie’s unwavering belief in his vision remains crystal clear. From public endorsements to penning an open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden over the 2023 election results, she has stood solidly by him.
For her, it’s simple: Nigeria deserves leaders who are genuine, curious, and grounded — and Peter Obi, in her view, checks all those boxes.
