ETHIO Telecom, Djibouti Telecom, and Sudatel Telecom Group have announced the Horizon Fibre Initiative, a groundbreaking project to establish high-capacity fibre optic connectivity spanning Africa, Europe, and Asia. This collaboration aims to revolutionise Africa’s digital infrastructure, addressing regional connectivity challenges while positioning the continent as a key player in the global digital economy.
The initiative, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will create a multi-terabit terrestrial fibre optic network to provide seamless, low-latency, and highly reliable connectivity. Operations are expected to begin by April 2025. By integrating advanced infrastructure and technical expertise from all three telecoms, the project will ensure robust and scalable data transmission that meets the needs of hyperscalers, content providers, and businesses.
The Horizon Fibre Initiative is set to boost Africa’s economic growth by enhancing digital access, supporting industries, and facilitating international trade. It also addresses frequent disruptions associated with submarine cables in the Red Sea, such as damage from anchoring accidents and natural disasters, offering a cost-effective and resilient alternative.
The network’s design will strengthen Africa’s integration into the global digital ecosystem, while fostering regional collaboration. The project reflects a shared vision for a digitally inclusive future, aligning with Africa’s Digital Transformation Strategy 2030.
Ethio telecom described the initiative as a ‘pivotal step in Africa’s digital journey, integrating the region into the global digital economy.’ Djibouti Telecom highlighted the project as a symbol of innovation and collaboration that will improve connectivity for communities and businesses. Sudatel Telecom Group emphasised its strategic role in advancing regional integration, stating that the initiative will ‘ensure Africa’s place in the global digital landscape.’
Towards a digital powerhouse
With its high-capacity, low-latency network, the Horizon Fibre Initiative promises to transform Africa’s connectivity, unlocking new opportunities for growth and innovation. By addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges, this collaboration positions the continent to thrive in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
