How terrorists killed 75 in Kwara communities – Victim’s family

Fresh accounts have revealed chilling details of how suspected terrorists carried out Tuesday’s deadly assault on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama LGA of Kwara State. Ali Umar, younger brother to the traditional ruler of Woro, told NAN that the attackers stormed the village shortly after 5:00 p.m., arriving on motorcycles and swiftly surrounding the area.

According to Umar, the gunmen began shooting from different directions, making escape almost impossible for residents. Those who tried to run were shot, while others who surrendered were gathered at the palace of the village head, tied up, and killed. The coordinated nature of the attack left the community in complete panic and confusion.

He also disclosed that the traditional ruler’s wife, mother, and three children were abducted during the invasion and remain missing. Umar said the once-busy community is now nearly deserted, as survivors fled in fear and have yet to return to their homes.

Umar revealed that there had been prior intelligence warnings about a possible attack, which were reportedly shared with local authorities and higher levels of government. Although soldiers had earlier patrolled the area that day, their presence only delayed the attackers, who returned once the patrol ended.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited Kaiama on Wednesday night alongside security chiefs and confirmed that 75 residents were killed for refusing to submit to extremist demands. He announced that President Bola Tinubu had approved the deployment of an army battalion under a security initiative named Operation Savannah Shield to intensify counter-offensives in the area.

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, also condemned the killings and called for intensified military operations along the border areas. He urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to restore safety and confidence in the affected communities.
