In preparation for the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will kick off nationwide on August 18, 2025.
The announcement was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Benue State, Prof. Sam Egwu, during a media briefing on Monday. According to Egwu, the voter registration exercise is a crucial step to ensure all eligible Nigerians—especially those who recently turned 18 or missed the last round—have a chance to participate in the democratic process.
“It’s a constitutional duty. We are opening this window to ensure no Nigerian is left out. If you have come of age or couldn’t register last time due to travel, incarceration, or any other reason, this is your moment,”Prof. Egwu said.
Online First, Then Physical Capture
The registration will begin online on August 18 through the official INEC website, where individuals can pre-register their details. This will be followed by in-person physical capture across all INEC Area Offices and designated centresnationwide starting from August 25, running weekdays from 9am to 3pm.
The CVR will cover a wide range of updates, including:
-
First-time registrants (especially those who turned 18 after the last election)
-
Nigerians who lost or damaged their PVCs
-
People requesting changes in their biodata or relocation (within or across states)
-
Citizens previously uninterested in the voting process who now wish to participate
Don’t Pay to Register – It’s Free!
Prof. Egwu issued a strong warning against bribery or extortion, urging citizens not to pay anyone for registration.
“INEC registration is completely free. Don’t let anyone demand money from you. If you experience that, report it. Nigerians deserve to register with dignity,” he emphasised.
He also appealed to citizens to avoid waiting until the last minute, reminding the public of the chaotic scenes that usually play out during rushed registrations.
“Take advantage of the early window. Early registration will save you the stress and long queues that typically happen towards the end,” Egwu advised.
As Nigeria gradually gears up for another crucial election cycle, the CVR exercise is a key reminder that every vote still matters, and now is the time to get ready to cast it.
