Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the passing of its former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died earlier today, Saturday, July 13, 2025, in a clinic in London, United Kingdom.
The news was confirmed by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, via a heartfelt post on social media platform X, where he shared:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”
A separate official statement signed by Garba Shehu, his longtime spokesman and confidant, also confirmed the news, offering prayers for his soul and support for the grieving family.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari was a man of immense influence and discipline—a former military ruler turned civilian president, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected leader from 2015 to 2023.
President Buhari was known for his resolute stance against corruption, his efforts to restore economic stability, and his unwavering commitment to the unity and sovereignty of Nigeria. Though often a polarising figure, he earned admiration for his austere lifestyle, strong convictions, and military-style approach to governance.
His leadership spanned critical moments in Nigeria’s history, from his brief military rule (1983–1985) to his emergence as a democratic president after three failed attempts. He ultimately became a symbol of resilience, often reminding citizens that “we must kill corruption before it kills Nigeria.”
As the nation processes the loss of one of its most consequential post-independence leaders, tributes have begun pouring in from across political lines, world leaders, and ordinary Nigerians who either revered his principles or debated his policies.
According to family sources, further details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course, in line with Islamic burial rites.
From the arid plains of Daura to the corridors of Aso Rock, Muhammadu Buhari leaves behind a complex legacy of service, sacrifice, and unyielding patriotism.
May Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.

Rest in peace, Baba.
