TRUMP’s affection for Dictators like Putin of Russia and Kim Ju Un of North Korea, which contradicts American democratic culture, may have been exploited by Rep Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee to be driving the proposal for an amendment to US constitution to allow Trump run for a third term.
And the fact that the wording of the proposed amendment is Trump- centric, confers a measure of credibility on this thought.
For me the proposed move is a disturbing development that undermines the principles of American democracy. This attempt to alter the fundamental rules of the political game is an invitation to dictatorship, threatening to distort the very fabric of the American political culture.
The 22nd Amendment, which limits a president to two terms, was ratified in 1951 to prevent the concentration of power and protect the nation from the dangers of authoritarianism.
By proposing to amend this amendment, the lawmaker is, in effect, seeking to dismantle a crucial safeguard against dictatorship.
This move is particularly concerning given the global context, where democratic norms are under threat from rising authoritarianism. The United States has long been a beacon of democracy, and any attempt to undermine its democratic institutions is a step in the wrong direction.
Furthermore, this proposal raises questions about the motivations behind it. Is it a genuine attempt to serve the nation, or is it driven by partisan interests or personal loyalty to Trump? The American people deserve transparency and accountability from their elected representatives.
This ill-conceived idea threatens the very foundations of American democracy. It is important that lawmakers prioritize the principles of democracy and the rule of law, rather than succumbing to the temptation of dictatorship.
America is too sophisticated a democracy to be romanticizing the idea of walking the path of Paul Biya’s Cameroon, Kagame’s Rwanda,
Museveni’s Uganda, Putin’s Russia etc etc.
