It was a moment of celebration and excitement on Friday as members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State trooped out to welcome Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, following his recent appointment as the General Secretary of the Coalition Party.
The former Minister of Interior and respected political figure arrived at the Lagos Airport from Abuja to a warm reception by a cheering crowd of party faithful, youth groups, and local leaders. Chants of “Ogbeni! Ogbeni!” echoed through the terminal as supporters waved banners and danced to welcome their leader.
Aregbesola’s arrival marks a significant political milestone for the Coalition Party, which is gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections. His appointment as General Secretary is seen by many analysts as a strategic move to consolidate the party’s growing influence, particularly in the Southwest.
Speaking briefly to journalists at the airport, one of the ADC coordinators in Lagos described Aregbesola’s return as “a sign of new beginnings” and “a boost to the party’s grassroots mobilisation.” According to her, “Ogbeni represents the kind of leadership Nigeria needs—courageous, focused, and connected to the people.”
Although Aregbesola did not deliver a formal address, sources close to his camp hinted that he is expected to unveil a new political roadmap for the Coalition Party in the coming weeks—one that would prioritize youth engagement, economic development, and unity across party lines.
As the 2027 race begins to take shape, all eyes will be on how Aregbesola’s new role within the Coalition Party reshapes political alliances in Lagos and beyond.
