PAUL Kagame’s overwhelming election victory, securing 99.15 percent of the vote, has garnered praise from various African leaders, reinforcing his extended rule in Rwanda for another five years.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni expressed eagerness to collaborate further with Kagame, highlighting the strong alliance between Uganda and Rwanda. Kenyan President William Ruto commended Kagame as the ‘sovereign choice’ of Rwandans and emphasised the importance of regional solidarity.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi congratulated Kagame via phone, stressing continued coordination between their nations. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu underscored the significance of East African unity and cooperation. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed wished Kagame ongoing success and stability for Rwanda.
Kagame’s eligibility for this election stems from a 2015 constitutional amendment allowing him to seek three additional terms, with presidential terms reduced to five years starting in 2024.
