Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has directed security agencies to take over the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Development Initiative (PAGMI) site in Yauri Local Government Area, following a violent clash that claimed one life.
The governor issued the order on Monday during an inspection visit to the site. He also announced an immediate suspension of mining activities until proper documentation with the State Ministry of Mines and Solid Minerals is completed.
“This directive is aimed at ensuring sanity and peace for the benefit of the host community and society at large,” Idris said. “The security agencies should take charge of the entire area. I am also appealing to all artisans to formally register with the relevant authorities to avoid any further crisis or breach of peace.”
The governor further appealed to youths in Yauri to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence, warning that no society can thrive in an environment plagued by chaos, rancour, or violence.
He urged them to shun actions capable of igniting conflict, stressing that government is committed to creating a peaceful atmosphere where both communities and investors can benefit from the state’s mineral resources.
