The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 general elections. The unified endorsement was delivered during the APC Stakeholders’ Forum 2025, held on Tuesday at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The high-profile event saw the attendance of state and federal leaders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, former Minister Babatunde Fashola (SAN), and GAC Chairman Prince Tajudeen Olusi, among many others.
Sanwo-Olu Leads the Charge
Governor Sanwo-Olu led the call for Tinubu’s re-election, praising the President’s “creditable and transformational performance” in less than two years, particularly in the oil and gas sector.
“President Tinubu has surpassed expectations within a short period,” Sanwo-Olu declared. “His leadership has set the foundation for sustainable economic reforms. Lagos APC is proud to stand solidly behind him for a second term in 2027.”
Fashola Decries Voter Apathy
Former Governor Fashola used the platform to emphasize the crucial need for a functional reward system to maintain the loyalty and motivation of party members. He highlighted a concerning trend of voter apathy, noting a sharp contrast between high voter registration and low turnout.
Fashola pointed out a dramatic drop in democratic participation: less than 30 percent of Nigeria’s 93 million registered voters actually participated in the 2023 general elections. He urged the party to implement people-oriented programs to reignite public enthusiasm. GAC Chairman Prince Olusi echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for elected officials to reconnect with their grassroots base.
APC Implements New Reward System
In a bid to mobilize the base for 2027, Lagos APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi announced significant financial incentives:
- A ₦20 million cash prize for the local government area that records the highest number of newly registered voters.
- A ₦5 million prize for the winning political ward.
Ojelabi also disclosed a plan to refund fees paid by aspirants who lost in the recent council elections, stating that refunds would be issued to those who are not picked as aides after the council chairmen conclude appointments across the 57 councils and LCDAs.
The forum concluded with federal lawmakers, led by Senator Tokunbo Abiru and Hon. Dolapo Badru, reaffirming the state chapter’s readiness to deliver a “resounding victory” for the APC and President Tinubu in 2027.
