Lagos Orders Full Inspection of E-Hailing Vehicles Over Safety Concerns

The Lagos State Government is moving to tighten safety checks on all vehicles used by licensed e-hailing platforms, following complaints about poorly maintained cars and lapses in service quality.

In a statement on Sunday titled “LASG to Roll Out Inspection Schedule for E-Hailing Operators”, Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the state has noticed the “deplorable condition” of some vehicles operating under registered ride-hailing companies, prompting a planned full-scale audit.

“The safety of passengers is our priority. Any vehicle that fails inspection will not be allowed to operate on Lagos roads,” Osiyemi warned.

He also criticized gaps in the databases of some operators, noting that the lack of proper records makes it harder to trace crimes committed through their services.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Olawale Musa, added that only vehicles officially registered with the state will be permitted going forward, describing unregistered cars as a “serious security risk.”

“All e-hailing drivers must also be certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute,” Musa said, advising residents to avoid offline ride bookings for their own safety.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Transportation in Alausa, Ikeja, brought together representatives from Uber, Bolt, Lagride, Laurie, Vas Acquico, InDrive, Folti Tech, and EDryv. Companies at the session showcased their latest safety upgrades, from panic buttons to stricter driver verification systems.
