The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property following the tragic collapse of a building in Ebute Meta.
Speaking at the site on Monday evening, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said investigations had begun to uncover the cause of the incident. He explained that material testing and empirical assessments were underway, involving all relevant stakeholders.
“So far, we have rescued six persons alive, while four have unfortunately been confirmed dead. Our priority is safety, peace and a coordinated response. Heavy-duty equipment is fully deployed, and we are treating this operation with utmost seriousness,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He emphasized that while enforcement of building regulations is ongoing, preventing such tragedies requires collective responsibility. “We appeal to Lagosians to comply with government regulations and report defective structures. Enforcement alone cannot prevent disasters without community support,” he noted.
The LASEMA boss also highlighted that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to strict building code enforcement and round-the-clock rescue operations. He urged residents to remain calm and allow emergency responders to continue their work without hindrance.
