Security operatives in Libya have arrested a Libyan man and his mother after they were caught trying to smuggle six undocumented Nigerian migrants.
The arrest happened on Sunday, August 17, 2025, during a routine police patrol in the Sirte area. According to authorities, the suspects were intercepted while transporting the migrants in a vehicle.
Migrant Rescue Watch, in a statement on Monday, confirmed the development, noting that both the driver and his mother were immediately handed over to the relevant security agencies alongside the migrants.
“Abu Najim Police Dept. (Sirte) seized a vehicle and arrested a Libyan driver (‘A.M.M.’) accompanied by his mother for attempted human smuggling of six undocumented migrants of Nigerian nationality. All have been referred to competent authorities for legal action,” the group disclosed.
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by many Nigerians seeking irregular migration routes through North Africa, often in search of better opportunities but ending up vulnerable to traffickers, smugglers, or harsh legal consequences.
