Made Kuti Fires Back at Ethnic Critics: Calls Tribal Hate “Slave Mentality”

Afrobeat singer, Made Kuti, grandson of the late Fela Kuti, has spoken out against critics dragging his marriage to Inedoye Onyenso because of ethnic differences.

The couple tied the knot in November 2023 at a civil wedding in Lagos, but since then, some people have taken to social media to question their union, claiming they were “mixing blood” because Made is Yoruba while Inedoye is Igbo.

Responding to a recent jab from an X user who mocked him as a “foolish Yoruba man” for marrying outside his tribe, Made Kuti hit back strongly. He described such thinking as nothing but “slave mentality,” urging people to unlearn toxic ethnic biases.

Made reminded critics that Pan-African heroes like his great-grandmother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, his grandfather Fela Kuti, Kwame Nkrumah, and Thomas Sankara all preached unity over division. For him, Africa’s true progress lies in breaking down tribal walls and embracing one another.

In his words, Africa has more to gain when united rather than divided by ethnic lines.
