Malawi Sets Example for Africa as PATROL-AFRICA Hails Peaceful Elections

The Pan-African Alliance for Transparency and Rule of Law in Africa (PATROL-AFRICA) has showered praises on Malawians for showing the true spirit of democracy in their just-concluded elections. The regional advocacy group said both voters and leaders deserve accolades for the peaceful transition of power.

In its statement, PATROL-AFRICA hailed citizens for their strong commitment to democracy, noting how they went to the polls and embraced change in a calm and orderly manner. It also congratulated the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and President-Elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for running a well-organized campaign, stressing that “the victory belongs to the Malawian people.”

Outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera was equally applauded for conceding defeat gracefully. According to the group, his decision showed maturity in leadership and reinforced Malawians’ resolve to protect their constitution and the rule of law.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was not left out of the commendations. PATROL-AFRICA described its handling of the polls as proof that independent institutions remain the backbone of credible elections. It said the MEC’s performance was a “remarkable example” other African electoral bodies should emulate.

Looking ahead, the Dakar-based organisation promised to work closely with Malawi’s new leadership in strengthening transparency, democracy, and the rule of law. Founded by Senegalese jurist Adama Dieng, PATROL-AFRICA continues to push for legal and judicial reforms across Africa, seeing them as the foundation for sustainable political and socio-economic growth.
