Messi Drives Inter Miami to Historic MLS Cup Win With Masterclass Against Vancouver
Lionel Messi delivered the spark and control Inter Miami desperately needed, guiding the club to a dramatic 3–1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps to secure their first-ever MLS Cup title. His influence ran through every decisive moment at Chase Stadium, turning a tense final into another landmark night in his legendary career.
Miami struck first within the opening ten minutes after Messi weaved through defenders and released Tadeo Allende, whose dangerous cut-back forced Edier Ocampo into an own goal. The early advantage gave Miami confidence, but Vancouver responded with intensity after the break, dominating possession and pushing high up the pitch.
The visitors’ pressure paid off in the 60th minute when Ali Ahmed punished a mistake from goalkeeper Rocco Rios-Novo to restore parity. With momentum appearing to swing Vancouver’s way, Messi stepped forward once again at the perfect moment.
He capitalised on Vancouver’s rare defensive lapse, winning the ball from an errant pass by Andrés Cubas before delivering a defence-splitting assist to Rodrigo De Paul. The midfielder finished calmly to put Miami back in front, swinging the rhythm firmly back in the hosts’ favour.
Deep into extra time, Allende struck again, firing home to seal the win and set a new postseason scoring record, once more created by Messi’s vision. The victory also marked an emotional farewell for Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who will both retire at the end of the season.
Inter Miami, powered by Messi’s leadership, composure and creative brilliance, finally lifted their first MLS Cup and etched their name into league history.
