NANS Disowns Fake Representatives, Affirms Support for Peaceful Protest Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has dismissed reports suggesting that it is not part of the planned nationwide protest calling for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National President, Comrade Atiku Isah, NANS described the claims as “a deliberate act of misinformation” orchestrated to weaken public support for the peaceful demonstration. The association accused certain individuals—whom it described as “touts hired by agents of government”—of impersonating NANS members to create confusion and dissociate the student body from the movement.

NANS reaffirmed its full support for the peaceful protest, emphasizing that it stands with Nigerians demanding justice and the rule of law. Comrade Isah stated that the association remains committed to defending citizens’ rights, noting that peaceful protest is a legitimate tool in a democracy.

“The attention of NANS has been drawn to an online publication aimed at misleading Nigerians dissatisfied with the injustice surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s detention,” the statement read. “Some touts were hired to claim to be members of our prestigious organization to distance themselves from the planned peaceful protest.”

The statement concluded by calling on all “well-meaning Nigerians” to join the demand for Kanu’s unconditional release, stressing that “an injury to one is an injury to all.”

With this position, NANS has made clear that it remains firmly aligned with the principles of justice, unity, and democratic freedom in Nigeria.
