The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 75-year-old man found with 4.7 kilograms of skunk at Ovum village in Obingwa Local Government Area (LGA), Abia State.
According to a statement released on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the arrest was made on Wednesday, October 22. In the same local government, another suspect, aged 60, was also caught with 225 grams of skunk at Apanta village.
In Ondo State, NDLEA operatives carried out a major raid at Lot Camp, Ikun Akoko, recovering about 150 kilograms of skunk. Meanwhile, two more suspects were arrested with 234.5 kilograms of the same substance in Yan Aya, Saminaka, Lere LGA, Kaduna State, on Friday, October 24.
Babafemi also revealed that another group of suspects was apprehended along the Abuja–Kaduna highway with 8,600 pills of tramadol (225mg) and rohypnol.
At the Seme border in Lagos, NDLEA officers arrested yet another suspect on Wednesday, October 22, with 55 kilograms of skunk at Ashipa, Badagry. A separate operation in the Itoga area of Badagry led to the seizure of 121.3 litres of “skuchies” — a locally made mixture of drugs and alcohol.
In Zamfara State, NDLEA operatives on patrol along the Gummi–Anka road intercepted a suspect transporting an AK-47 rifle and 1,746 rounds of ammunition for AK-47 and GPMG rifles. The weapons were reportedly being moved from Sokoto to the Bagega forest in Anka LGA.
According to Babafemi, the suspect and the recovered exhibits have since been handed over to the appropriate security authorities for further investigation.
He added that NDLEA formations nationwide have continued their “War Against Drug Abuse (WADA)” sensitisation programs in schools, religious centres, workplaces, and communities.
In the past week alone, awareness lectures were held at several schools, including Asabari Grammar School in Oyo, Government Day Girls Secondary School in Kebbi, St. Mark’s College in Enugu, Kusaki Secondary School in Benue, and Police Children School 2 in Rivers. Others included Hajara Ahmad International School in Kano and Government Day Secondary School in Taraba State.
Babafemi reaffirmed that NDLEA remains committed to fighting the spread of drug abuse and illegal trafficking across Nigeria.
