THE Noble Women and Children Initiative (NWCI), an NGO, on Wednesday sponsored 22 students to the Uphill College of Education, Badagry, Lagos State for the National Certificate of Education (NCE) under its scholarship scheme.
Speaking at the scholarship award ceremony, the NWCI President, Adaora Obi-Onwu said the 22 students were among 35 others that collected forms under its scholarship scheme.
According to her, the students will be given an opportunity to go further in their education or be employed for a teaching job.
“Today is the graduation ceremony of 22 students under our NCE scholarship scheme.
“We started the scheme in 2022, and have given admission to many students. Now we have 32 students in 100 level, 18 in 200 level and today 22 is graduating.
“This is our own way of giving back to society. The best investment should be on humanity.
“When you educate and empower young men and women, you have given them what to depend on,” she said.
She said the initiative had been giving back to society through its empowerment and training programmes.
“We distributed palliatives during the COVID-19 pandemic , visited correctional centres to give them food items, we also had initiatives for school children, and food donations during the Christmas period among others.
“Through the initiative, we are trying to bring out the best in women and children because they are the most vulnerable,” she said.
Mr Chuka Igwe, one of the students and beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme, said he was surprised when a member of the initiative approached him.
“I was surprised when they came to us proposing to sponsor students under the scheme. Many of us responded.
“They have carried it out and today, we are graduating. This has been a wonderful journey.
“At 56 years, I am grateful to God that I was given an opportunity to go back to school. My plan is to read further and come back to lecture ,” he said.
Igwe thanked the initiative for giving him the opportunity after many years in business.
Another beneficiary, 26-year-old Miss Charity Ozigbo, a graduate of Economics and Social Sciences, said she saw it as a great opportunity.
She commended the NGO for introducing the scholarship scheme to help the vulnerable in Badagry.
