A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), known as ‘SOS Children’s Villages’ has supported 10 resilient Borno Women Communities under the Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) with N60 million grant to do business, feed their children and families.
Recalled that the over decade atrocities posed by Boko Haram Terrorists have displaced millions of people from their ancestral homes, while many left without means of livelihood.
Flagging off the distribution of the the cash support to leadership of 10 various VSLAs in Maiduguri on Tuesday, the Chief National Programme Officer, SOS Children’s Village Nigeria, Mr. Ayodeji Adelopo, said, the gesture is inline with Family Strengthening Project (FSP) been implemented in partnership with Borno State Government and to also commemorate the 2024 Humanitarian Day in the state.
He said, each of the 10 VSLAs has over 15 members who have been carefully selected and registered with the Borno State Government to ensure transparency and accountability.
The programme according to Adelopo is focused on supporting children without parental care and families at risk.
His words: “There is a powerful quote that says, ‘When we learn how to become resilient, we learn how to embrace the beautifully broad spectrum of the human existence’.
“This sentiment deeply resonates with the people of Borno State and their unwavering journey of resilience over the years.
“At SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria, our mission is clear: ensuring that every child grows up in a stable, loving environment through family strengthening and alternative care initiatives.
“A critical component of this mission is fostering economic independence in vulnerable communities, particularly through the establishment and support of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAS).
“In line with our strategic objectives, we identified 10 communities, provided them with start-up kits, comprehensive training, and practical guidance on managing VSLAS.
“These groups now stand as shining examples of what can be achieved through determination, unity, and hard work. Their success is a powerful testament to the fact that when
women are empowered, entire communities benefit.
“These VSLAs, led by resilient and visionary women, have not only survived but thrived, generating over a million naira in revenue since their inception. They have demonstrated remarkable resilience, continually adapting to the ever-changing economic landscape of our nation.
“As we anticipate an economic upturn in our country, it is imperative that the sustainability and progress of these VSLAS continue unabated. At SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria, we remain steadfast in our support and commitment to these communities.
“We are dedicated to fostering resilience and restoring hope among the people of Borno. Moreover, we will continue to collaborate with the state government, partners, and the broader community to ensure that these VSLAs not only survive but also grow, overcoming current economic challenges, building sustainable livelihoods, and contributing even more to the development of Borno State.
“With the disbursement of 60 million naira in grants to the VSLAS across ten communities today, we are not just investing in businesses-we are investing in the future of families. We are investing in the education, health, and nutrition of children, in their livelihoods, and in the overall well-being of these communities”. Said Adelopo.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Head of Brand and Communication-Nigeria, Mrs. Rhoda Daniel Ocheche appreciated all the leadership of VSLAs and members for their display of ingenuity, transparency and commitment towards the project, and pledged to continue give support for sustainability and economic empowerment.
Mrs. Ocheche however urges the government and other NGOs to invest in child-centered programs, ensure accountability, and strengthen partnerships to create sustainable solutions.
In her vote of thanks on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Leader of VSLAs of Goidangari community of Jere local government area, Hajiya Halima commended SOS Children’s Villages for supporting the women folk who are more vulnerable in the society.
She promised that they will judiciously and transparently utilize the funds provided for the purpose intended, so as to make them and their families economically self reliant. End
