Nigeria Mourns Billionaire Philanthropist Alhaji Aminu Dantata, Dead at 94

Nigeria has lost one of its most respected business icons and philanthropists, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, who passed away at the age of 94.

The sad news was first shared on Saturday through a heartfelt social media post by Uba Tanko Mijinyawa, Deputy National Treasurer of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA). In his words, “Inna Lillahi wa’inna ilaihi Raji’un… Allah ya yi wa babanmu Dattijo, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, rasuwa.” Translated, he prayed: “Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. May Allah have mercy on our father and elder.”

Tanko also mentioned that details of the Muslim funeral prayer (Jana’iza) would be announced soon.

The news was further confirmed by Mustapha Abdullahi Junaid, Dantata’s Principal Private Secretary, who also expressed his sorrow, saying, “It is with heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father… May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings.”

Born into the legendary Dantata family, Alhaji Aminu Dantata was more than just a businessman. As the founder of Express Petroleum & Gas Company Ltd., he played a major role in shaping Nigeria’s private sector. He also made a historic mark in Nigeria’s banking industry by helping establish Jaiz Bank, the country’s first Islamic (non-interest) financial institution.

He was also known for his humility, generosity, and quiet influence in both business and community development. Many Nigerians, especially in Kano and the northern region, will remember him for his unwavering commitment to philanthropy, education, and faith.

Dantata was also an uncle to Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and a mentor to many others who have followed his entrepreneurial footsteps.

His passing marks the end of an era—one shaped by integrity, enterprise, and compassion. As the nation awaits funeral arrangements, tributes continue to pour in for a man whose legacy will echo for generations.
