Nigeria Police Reaffirms Commitment to Youth and Community Partnerships for Peace

The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its readiness to continue partnering with institutions and organizations that promote peace through youth engagement and community action.

This was disclosed by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, at the Opening Ceremony of the Global Security-Sector-Reform Foundation (GS Foundation) Youth Sports Tournament, held on Saturday, 27th September 2025, at the Old Parade Ground Stadium, Garki, Abuja.

The Inspector-General of Police commended the cross-border initiative, describing it as a reflection of the modern philosophy of policing built on collaboration, partnership, and proactive crime prevention rather than reaction.

Speaking on behalf of the IGP, AIG Gumel expressed appreciation to the Global Security-Sector-Reform Foundation (GS Foundation) for the thoughtful initiative and for fostering global friendship through sports.

“I wish to specially acknowledge Mr. Georg Partenheimer and the Foundation team for their enduring commitment to community development and peacebuilding,” he said.

AIG Gumel further noted that such partnerships illustrate how police cooperation and youth engagement can strengthen peace and security from the grassroots. Reflecting on his own experience, he added:

“Linking back to the Kano Initiative, this moment brings personal joy and reflection. Years ago, in Kano, we used sports as a bridge — bringing young people together, away from crime, toward teamwork, tolerance, and purpose. To see that humble idea now inspiring a global model by our German partners, the GS Foundation, reaffirms the universal power of positive policing and community engagement.”

He explained that youth empowerment and international cooperation remain essential tools in sustaining peace and security across communities.

In his concluding remarks, AIG Gumel urged participants to view the tournament as more than a competition:

“Let this be a platform not only for producing winners on the field but also for nurturing ambassadors of peace and resilience within Nigeria’s communities.”

He congratulated the organizers, participants, and all supporting partners for turning this noble vision into reality and prayed that the tournament continues to strengthen the bonds of friendship, peace, and global solidarity among all nations represented.
