Nigeria Reacts Strongly as Coup Rocks Guinea-Bissau, Demands Immediate Return to Democracy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the sudden military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an alarming and unconstitutional seizure of power that threatens the fragile stability of the West African region.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria received the news of the coup “with profound dismay and deep concern.” According to the government, the action not only disrupts constitutional order but also reverses years of democratic progress in the country.

Nigeria expressed firm solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and called for the immediate restoration of civilian rule. The statement demanded the safety of all detained officials, respect for democratic institutions, and protection of electoral observers who are still in the country.

Referencing the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, Nigeria reminded the region that it rejects any acquisition of power through unconstitutional means. It urged all actors involved to stay calm, embrace dialogue, and respect the results of the recently concluded elections, as announced by the electoral commission.

Reaffirming its role as a committed member of ECOWAS and the African Union, the Nigerian government pledged to work closely with regional and global partners to help restore constitutional governance. It reiterated its unwavering commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and stability across the African continent.
