Nigerian Air Force officer detained over alleged coup plot against Tinubu

Nigerian Air Force officer Noel Godday Zuzu is among military personnel held by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for allegedly plotting a coup to overthrow President Bola Tinubu, according to SaharaReporters. The arrests of senior officers, led by an Army Brigadier General, were first reported in October 2025.

Zuzu, from Bayelsa State, is reportedly related to former Governor Timipre Sylva. Before his arrest, he was attached to 053 HQ NAF Camp in Abuja. A graduate of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Zuzu holds the rank of Squadron Leader (equivalent to a Major in the Army). He is among 36 detainees, including officers of various ranks and 10 non-commissioned officers.

Families of the detained officers have raised concerns about inhumane treatment, prolonged incommunicado detention, and denial of access to lawyers and relatives. While earlier denials dismissed any coup plot, a recent statement from the Defence Headquarters now acknowledges that some detained officers are accused of planning to overthrow the government.
