Nigerian Army Confirms Death of Man During Clash With Soldier in Delta State

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a man was killed by a soldier during a confrontation at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State.

According to a statement issued by Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 63 Brigade, Asaba, the incident occurred on October 13, 2025, when a group of individuals attempted to force their way into the estate without completing the routine security checks. The soldier on duty reportedly stopped them and requested their identification, but the group allegedly became hostile and violent.

The statement identified the deceased as a man named Ugo. It explained that the situation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the soldier acted in self-defence. “The fracas resulted in the death of the suspect, who engaged the soldier on duty in a scuffle,” the army said. The injured man was later taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The 63 Brigade confirmed that the Otu-Jeremi Police Division had been notified of the incident for further investigation. The army also emphasized its commitment to protecting human rights while urging residents to remain law-abiding and comply with security protocols.

“The Brigade wishes to reiterate to the good people of Delta State the need to remain law-abiding and subject themselves to checks in line with standard operating procedures,” the statement read, adding that respect for citizens’ rights remains a top priority in the discharge of military duties.
