Nigerian Army renovates 91-year-old primary school in Sokoto under civil–military initiative

The Nigerian Army, through the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Special Intervention Civil–Military Cooperation Scheme, has renovated the 91-year-old Magajin Rafi Model Primary School in Sokoto State. The project was recommended by its executor and alumnus of the school, Maj.-Gen. Abbas Idris.

At the inauguration ceremony, Governor Ahmed Aliyu, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idris Gobir, described the effort as a meaningful act of giving back to society. He emphasised that primary education remains the foundation of societal development, where future leaders are shaped and long-term success begins.

The governor noted that the school has produced many prominent Nigerians who have served at federal, state, and local government levels, including senior military officers, politicians, technocrats, and community leaders. He commended Maj.-Gen. Idris for supporting the state’s drive toward quality education.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Maj.-Gen. Paul Koughna, stated that the renovation forms part of over 250 similar projects executed nationwide under the Army’s non-kinetic operations. These include schools, hospitals, and other community facilities aimed at strengthening public trust.

Maj.-Gen. Idris explained that the renovation was inspired by his personal experience as a former pupil and his desire to create a conducive learning environment for future generations. He also appreciated the support of defence authorities, the Sokoto State Government, and the Sultanate Council for their continued commitment to education and security.
