Nigerian Caregiver Arrested in Canada Over Alleged Assaults on Vulnerable Adults

A 38-year-old Nigerian, Oghenemaro Ejerua, has been arrested by the Toronto Police Service in Canada over allegations that he assaulted vulnerable adults while working as a caregiver at a group home in East Toronto.

According to a statement published on the Toronto Police Service website and obtained on Tuesday, Ejerua was taken into custody after being declared wanted in December 2025. The police said he was employed as a caregiver at a group home located around Sibley Avenue and Dentonia Park Avenue between November 1 and November 30, 2025.

Investigators alleged that during the period of his employment, Ejerua committed a series of assaults against residents of the care facility. The case came to light after police responded to a distress call on the morning of December 10, 2025, around 9 a.m., reporting an assault at the location.

Following preliminary investigations, the suspect was declared wanted, prompting a manhunt by the police. He was later arrested and formally charged.

In the statement, the police said Ejerua has been charged with seven counts of assault. He was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 10 Armoury Street on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

Authorities stressed that the allegations are yet to be tested in court, and the accused remains innocent until proven guilty.

This is not the first time a Nigerian has been arrested in Canada over serious criminal allegations. Recently, Toronto Police also arrested a 28-year-old Nigerian, Babatunde Afuwape, in connection with the killing of a 20-year-old university student, Shivank Avasthi. Afuwape was charged with murder over the incident, which reportedly occurred on December 23, 2025.

The latest arrest has once again drawn attention to the responsibilities placed on caregivers working with vulnerable populations and the importance of strict oversight in such facilities.
