NIGERIA’S Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a cautionary advisory to its nationals living in or travelling to Australia, citing an alarming rise in hate crimes and xenophobic incidents targeting foreigners. The ministry expressed concern over what it described as an ‘unfortunate recent surge’ in discriminatory acts, including Islamophobia, in various Australian cities.
Call for vigilance
The advisory urged Nigerians to exercise caution, emphasising the need for heightened awareness of the social and cultural climate.
‘Nigerians are therefore advised to be mindful of the prevailing cultural and social dynamics to ensure their safety and comfort,’ the ministry stated.
High-profile hate incidents
The warning comes after Australian authorities pledged to address a spike in hate crimes that followed the outbreak of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023. The conflict has led to heightened tensions globally, with Australia witnessing a noticeable rise in xenophobic behaviour and Islamophobic rhetoric.
Reports indicate that over 45,500 Palestinians, including many women and children, have lost their lives in the ongoing war, with another 11,000 reported missing. This humanitarian crisis has fuelled polarising reactions worldwide, including within Australian communities.
Resources for Nigerian nationals
In light of the rising incidents, the Nigerian government has urged its nationals in Australia to report any racist attacks or harassment to its High Commission in Canberra.
