Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State has been left in shock after a brutal attack by gunmen suspected to be linked to Sahel-based terrorist networks. Dozens of residents lost their lives when the attackers stormed the town on Tuesday evening, spreading fear among families and travellers caught in the chaos.
Among those reported killed were two wives of the Emir of Woro, several of his children, the Chief Imam, a school principal, a headmistress, and students who had just returned from school. The Emir’s palace was set ablaze during the assault, and the Emir, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, remains missing, raising fears of possible abduction.
Local sources say the attackers may be connected to an extremist faction allegedly led by Sadiku. Tensions had reportedly been building for months after the Emir refused to cooperate with the group and alerted security agencies to their activities. Residents said the violence continued into Wednesday morning, targeting people who returned to check on their homes and loved ones.
Security forces were said to have responded to distress calls but were overwhelmed by the number of assailants. The community now mourns its dead while anxiously awaiting news about its missing traditional ruler.
