NiMet Warns of Dust Haze and Heavy Rainfall Across Nigeria, Urges Public to Stay Alert

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning Nigerians to prepare for varying conditions—ranging from dust haze in the North to heavy rainfall in the South—between Monday and Wednesday.

In a weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted slight dust haze and good visibility over states such as Borno, Zamfara, Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina. Residents in these areas were advised to take health precautions, especially those with respiratory challenges.

For the northeast, the agency forecast isolated thunderstorms and light rain in Taraba and Adamawa States later in the day. The central region, including Abuja, Nasarawa, and Kogi, would experience sunny skies with patches of clouds before giving way to light rain and thunderstorms in the evening.

NiMet also projected cloudy conditions across the southern region on Monday morning, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in states such as Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Abia, Ondo, and Lagos by afternoon and evening.

By Tuesday, dust haze will persist across the northern states, while Taraba and Adamawa are expected to see more rainfall. The central states will remain partly cloudy, with moderate rain over Abuja, Benue, and Nasarawa later in the day. In the south, rainfall is expected to intensify in Rivers, Cross River, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom, with possible flooding in some areas.

For Wednesday, NiMet anticipates sunny skies in the North, with light rain over Taraba and isolated thunderstorms across Kogi and the FCT. The southern states—especially Lagos, Ogun, Delta, and Rivers—should brace for afternoon and evening rainfall.

The agency warned of potential flash floods in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River, urging local authorities to activate emergency response systems. Motorists were advised to drive cautiously in wet conditions, while airline operators were reminded to obtain location-specific weather updates before flights.

NiMet also appealed to individuals with asthma and other respiratory issues to limit outdoor activities due to dust particles in northern Nigeria.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to keeping Nigerians informed, urging the public to stay updated through NiMet’s website and official channels for real-time weather information.
